HSS Not-for-Profit Seminar: Navigating Change for Social Impact

Session 1: Accounting & Auditing Standards Update – There’s a new audit report in Canada.  Find out how this change and other standards changes will impact your organization.

Alex Briganti – CPA, CA, LPA Hogg, Shain & Scheck: Alex graduated from York University in 2006 and received his Chartered Accountant designation in 2010.  Today, with over eleven years of experience, Alex supports privately owned businesses and not-for-profit organizations providing accounting, assurance, tax compliance and advisory services.

Session 2: How Legacy Giving is Different Than Fundraising – The window is closing – how can your organization jump into the world of legacy giving to secure a sustainable future?

Paul Nazareth – Vice President, Education & Development, Canadian Association of Gift Planners: Paul Nazareth is a leader in Canada’s philanthropic sector with over 18 years’ experience. Currently the Vice President, Education & Development at the Canadian Association of Gift Planners, he most recently was VP at the charity CanadaHelps. He has been a philanthropic advisor with Scotia Wealth and spent over a decade with charities like the University of Toronto and the 230 Churches of the Catholic Church of Greater Toronto. He is on the board of several charities, is Chair of the Advisory Board at the Humber College postgraduate fundraising program, a speaker in every Province with the Association of Fundraising Professionals, a national faculty instructor with CAGP as well as technical and tax leaders like Advocis, CPA and Estate Planning Councils. Paul writes on philanthropy for a variety of publications as well as appearing on national television to speak about creating a personal legacy through charity.

Session 3: GST/HST 101 – Avoid commodity tax landmines.  Understanding the unique rules for charities and not-for-profit organizations is the first step. 

Chris Munn – CPA, CA, BBA Hogg, Shain & Scheck: Chris is a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University, receiving his CA designation in 1990. He focuses on providing advice to owner-managed businesses in the areas of tax, estate planning, and international issues.

Session 4: Operating in a #MeToo Context – The not-for-profit sector is not immune.  What if a harassment situation happens in your organization?  Are you ready?

Ninette Bishay – CPA, CA Hogg, Shain & Scheck: Ninette is a partner and senior leader of the Charities & Not-for-Profit Service Team of Hogg, Shain & Scheck CPAs, and has been providing assurance, tax, and advisory services exclusively to this sector for approximately 16 years.

A frequent speaker and author on sector issues, Ninette regularly advises local, national, and international organizations on best practices with respect to financial reporting and accountability to stakeholders, internal control efficiencies, governance, reserves policies, and CRA compliance matters such as donation receipting, fundraising ratios, activities outside of Canada, inactive capital, and GST/HST.
