Dora Awards Support, HSS sponsoring awards again this year!
The 38th annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards celebrates the accomplishments of professionals in the performing arts community. The Awards ceremony will be held on June 26th at the Elgin Theatre and will be hosted by Raoul Bhaneja. Some of the awards come with a cash prize and thanks to sponsors, including Hogg, Shain & Scheck, $65,000 was raised and a portion will be rewarded to select winners.
The Dora Awards celebrates theatre, dance, and opera productions in 6 major categories: General Theatre, Independent Theatre, Musical Theatre, Theatre for Young Audiences, Dance, and Opera. For the full nominee list, please visit http://tapa.ca/dora-awards/201617-awards/nominees/.
Along with the announcement of the 2017 nominees, the Pauline McGibbon Award was handed out by Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell. The Pauline McGibbon Award is rewarded to a young, emerging theatre professional, who has the potential to grow and achieve great things in their early career. “The very act of gathering is the heart of live theatre,” said Dowdeswell as she presented the award to Joanna Yu, a York University Grad, who designs sets and costumes for a number of Toronto plays and productions.
In memory of Jon Kaplan, a longtime critic and reviewer, who passed away earlier this year, the Audience Choice Award will be renamed the Jon Kaplan Audience Choice Award. This award gives audiences and lovers of theatre an opportunity to choose their favourite show. The winner will be announced on June 26th.
In addition, the Leonard McHardy and John Harvey Arts Administration Award was given to Mitchell Marcus and the bi-annual George Luscombe Mentorship Award was given to Marjorie Chan.
